ABC Radio’s Alan Saunders Dies Suddenly

Dr Alan Saunders, a veteran of ABC Radio in Australia for the past 25 years, died suddenly in Sydney on Thursday after catching pneumonia.

The 58-year old radio presenters hosted ‘The Philosopher’s Zone’ for ABC Radio National.

Dr Saunders was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney but died unexpectedly on Thursday.

Alan was born and educated in London. He migrated to Australia in 1981 and studied at the Australian National University where he received his PhD.

He joined the Science Unit of ABC Radio National in 1987 and started The Food Program. Then in 1997 he presented The Comfort Zone for Radio National. In 2005 become co-presenter of Saturday Breakfast. His most recent program was ‘The Philosopher’s Zone’.

Alan also wrote for the ABC magazine ‘Delicious’, was the author of ‘A Is For Apple’ (Random House) and published his first novel ‘Alanna’ through Penguin in 2002.

In 1992, Dr Saunders was awarded the Pascall Prize for critical writing and broadcasting.

The ABC’s director of radio Kate Dundas said in a statement, “He has made an enormous contribution to the ABC, indeed, to Australia’s intellectual life, over more than two decades.”
