Apple Pensions Off iTunes

After 18 years of faithful service iTunes is set to retire.

Apple will replace its once innovative music platform with a series of apps for Music, Television and Podcasts. This will bring Apple’s music service into the modern era by allowing users to access their music from multiple devices and locations, much like how Netflix and Spotify work.

Apple launched iTunes on January 8, 2001. The original platform allowed users to create a digital music collection from paid downloads or by ripping their CD to the program.

A Windows version was released in 2003, then in 2005, iTunes expanded to include video and later added Podcasts and eBooks.

Apple didn’t invent iTunes. The original program SoundJam MP was developed by Bill Kincaid and released by Casady & Greene in 1999. Apple bought the program from Casady & Greene in 2000 and hired Kincaid to develop the program as an Apple employee.

Apple’s first iTunes was 1.0. The current version, 12.9.5.7, was upgraded this week on 28 May, 2019.
