Art music composers have the chance to share in A$100,000 worth of funding to create new commissioned work thanks to the APRA AMCOS Art Music Fund.

Launched in 2016, the Fund exists to see new works distributed as widely as possible among national and international audiences, and has already provided grants to 12 Australasian composers including Liza Lim, Sandy Evans, Cat Hope, Erkki Veltheim and Dan Thorpe.

Australian and New Zealand composers are now invited to apply for the 2017 Art Music Fund, with a total pool of $100,000 up for grabs.

The funding is available for the creation of commissioned work that is innovative, displays professional compositional craft and represents a benchmark of excellence in its field.

The work must have committed partners to ensure it is presented multiple times, and it is expected that composers will collaborate with ensembles, orchestras, producers, record companies, broadcasters, festivals and other parties to propose the writing of the work.

“The Art Music Fund provides resources to support composers which is much needed at a time of generally reduced government funding for individual artists in Australia,” says Liza Lim, 2016 Art Music Fund recipient.

“The support of APRA AMCOS and the AMC (Australian Music Centre) gives significant industry-level recognition to the field of contemporary classical music encouraging innovation and artistic risk-taking in this area.”

All art music composers are invited to submit an application for the Art Music Fund now.

“The thing that struck me about the Art Music Fund was the diversity of the recipients. Ages, stages of career, types of projects… It’s important to support new music in all of its forms, and by all those who make it,” says Dan Thorpe, 2016 Art Music Fund recipient.

“As an early career composer, I was honoured to be a recipient because those joining me all represent fascinating and different directions in new music, and to be considered even a small part of that was very humbling.”

Dean Ormston, APRA AMCOS Head of Member Services, says the organisation looks forward to helping composers create exceptional new work.

“The Art Music Fund reflects APRA AMCOS’ commitment to the art music sector and the important role it plays in the ecosystem of new Australian music,” he says.

“We’re also excited to announce we’ll be working with Creative Partnerships Australia and the Australian Cultural Fund to increase the value of the Art Music Fund, and will be sharing details of this relationship in the coming months.”
