Americana came of age in Australia this week with the first annual Australian Americana Honours Night.

The event was the first-ever official celebration of Americana music in Australia.

The night opened with a performance from Old Crow Medicine Show, Kasey Chambers performed with Bernard Fanning, Shane Howard sang his Goanna classic ‘Razor’s Edge’. However,  indigenous singer Yirrmal was the one stunning the audience.

The first annual event was hosted by Triple R presenter Denise Hylands who presents the show Twang and has been with the radio station since 1984.

Kasey Chambers was honoured for her work over decades in both the USA and Australia. The work of promoter Brian ‘BT’ Taranto, who founded the labour of love Americana music festival Out On The Weekend, was also recognised.

Jed Hilly, the Executive Director of the Americana Music Association, attended the event. Producer Nash Chambers, who recently relocated to Nashville from the Central Coast of New South Wales, also flew back for the night.

"Paul went away and started the label and George went away and wrote the song”, he said.
