California Honeydrops To Spread The Sounds Of New Orleans Throughout Australia

California Honeydrops have been around for about eight years now and spread the sounds of New Orleans (along with some San Fran funk) up and down the west coast of the USA.

In the States, fans have seen them opening for legendary names like B.B. King, Dr. John, Buddy Guy, and Allen Toussaint and Australia will have the chance to see California Honeydrops doing their own gigs in November, as well as some festivals.

Guitarist and trumpeter Lech Wierzynkski and drummer Ben Malament started this band busking in an Oakland BART station.

Lech was born in Warsaw, Poland, and raised by Polish political refugees. He discovered music listening to Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, and Louis Armstrong.

Anyone who has watched the TV show Treme would be familiar with ‘Second Line’. California Honeydrops use that unique freeform New Orleans movement as a template of their performance. “The whole point is to erase the boundaries between the crowd and us,” Wierzynski says. “We don’t make setlists. We want requests. We want crowd involvement, to make people become a part of the whole thing by dancing along, singing, picking the songs and generally coming out of their shells.”

California Honeydrops will tour Australia for Tombowler.
