Cyndi Lauper’s Kinky Boots Up For 13 Tony Awards

Cyndi Lauper’s Broadway musical, Kinky Boots, was given thirteen nominations in twelve categories for the 67th Annual Tony Awards.

The show is closely followed by fellow musical Matilda with twelve nominations, the revival of Pippin with 10 and the revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella with 9.

Lauper could have a first if she were to win for Best Score as no woman has won the category on her own. All others who have won shared the award with a writing partner.

  • Best Original Score – Cyndi Lauper
  • Best Performance By an Actor in a Leading Roll in a Musical – Billy Porter
  • Best Performance By an Actor in a Leading Roll in a Musical – Stark Sands
  • Best Performance By an Actress in a Featured Roll in a Musical – Annaleigh Ashford
  • Best Direction of a Musical – Jerry Mitchell
  • Best Choreography – Jerry Mitchell
  • Best Orchestrations – Stephen Oremus
  • Best Scenic Design of a Musical – David Rockwell
  • Best Costume Design of a Musical – Gregg Barnes
  • Best Lighting Design of a Musical – Kenneth Posner
  • Best Sound Design of a Musical – John Shivers
Tray Anastasio of Phish is also up for Best Original Score for the show Hands On a Hard Body which he wrote with Amanda Green.
Motown: The Musical was shut out of the Best Musical category but did get nominations for Valisia LeKae, who plays Diana Ross, for Actress in a Leading Roll, Charl Brown, who plays Smokey Robinson, for Actor in a Featured Roll, Orchestrations (Ethan Popp and Bryan Cook) and Sound Design of a Musical (Peter Hylenski).
The revival of the Mystery of Edwin Drood, written by Rupert Holmes, is up for Revival of a Musical, Performance By a Lead Actress in a Musical (Stephanie J. Block), Actor in a Featured Roll in a Musical (Will Chase), Direction of a Musical (Scott Ellis) and Scenic Design of a Musical (Anna Louizos). In its original 1985 to 1987 run, the show won Best Musical and Holmes won Best Book and Best Original Score.
The Tony Awards will be held on Sunday, June 9.
