Earthless drummer Mario Rubalcaba has compiled a list of his Top 10 favourite songs but he says he could easily have doubled the order.

Californian psychedelic band Earthless will return to Australia this month to tour for David Roy Williams.

EARTHLESS – AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND TOUR 2019

“I could have easily made this list a top 20,” Mario said. “I truly love so much music from Australia and it has been such a big part of my listening pleasure and adventures in my musical mind.

Mario Rubalcaba’s Top 10 Australian songs

1: Coloured Balls – “God” 18 minutes & 43 seconds of pure Rock fury recorded live at the legendary Sunbury festival in 1973 featuring The Godfather of Oz rock & garage – Lobby Lloyd. This tune is an all time burner and demands to be played only at TOP volume!

2: The Birthday Party – “Zoo Music Girl” All of their albums are a huge influence for me musically and especially on drums. The beats are out of this world dance and are just so wild n’ bouncy. At the time I had never heard anything like it and it just made my mind explode with creativity.

3: Scientists – “We Had Love” Dirgy guitar fuzz from the depths of the toxic green swampland of Kim Salmon’s brain.

4: Buffalo – “Shylock” Heavy n’ Doomy Sabbath inspired grooves with powerful lung filled crooning. This one really pounds.

5: Master Apprentices – “Easy to Lie” One of the few bands from the Garage R&B 60’s scene to make the transition into the 70’s hard rock scene and do it well. Very well. This song is all time heavy yet melodic and an all time classic rocker!

6: Fun Things – “Lipstick“ Brad Shepherd pre-Hoodoo Gurus. Radio Birdman/NY Dolls inspired Rock & Roll. Top notch songs and riffs mixed with snotty and abrasive guitars & vocals. One of the rarest and the best for sure in my book.

7: The Saints – “Demolition Girl” So hard to choose but I’ll go with this song because on live versions of it Ed K. goes into Improv mode and really takes it to another level. Its just an intense song full of paranoid anxiety n’ angst filled volume. ARRRRRGGHHH!!! Love it!

8: X – “Good on ya Baby” – Another highly underrated band featuring ex- Rose Tattoo legend Ian Rilen on bass. This is probably the heaviest Punk RNR IMO but also very Stonesy on this song. It is recorded very well yet still raw and in yr face and in yr ears how it should be!

9: The Missing Links – “Wild About You” Theres a reason why The Saints covered this tune, cuz it flat out rips yr guts out and does the Watusi stomp on’em! Wasn’t much like this going on in the mid 60’s. This is a timeless ear slicer.

10: Hoodoo Gurus – “I Want You Back” – Ex- Victims & Fun Things come together and form one of the biggest Oz bands of all time? I’m not sure if thats true or not but man have this band knocked out decades of catchy tunes for many a generation to love. My wife and I just love the Gurus. I remember being perplexed the first time I saw them as Brad Shepherd was wearing odd stage gear compared to pics I had seen prior. Cargo shorts and sneakers. A few years later I got to meet him and when I told him I was from San Diego it rang a bell and he said his laundry had gotten stolen and he had to buy some last minute clothes before that show hahaha – hence the tourist attire of that performance.

“Thank you for letting me share some of my faves with you all,” Mario said.

Mario also revealed his Top 10 movies of 2018 recently.
