Guy Sebastian spends a fifth consecutive week at No.1 on the ARIA Singles Chart with his longest running No.1 (so far) “Battle Scars” feat Lupe Fiasco, plus the song is now the equal third longest running chart-topper for 2012, tying with “Call Me Maybe” for Carly Rae Jepsen (TW-30).

Gavin Ryan reports that at this time last year Gotye was spending his fifth week at No.1 with “Somebody That I Used to know” (TW-55), and it would go on to spend a total of eight weeks at the top, which was also the last time an Aussie act spent four or more weeks at No.1.
Guy also moves up on the tally board for ‘Accumulated Weeks at No.1: 1940 to 2012’ to fourteen weeks, climbing from #53 to #47 on that list. There are only three Australian artists who have achieved more weeks at No.1 than Guy, John(ny) Farnham with 23 weeks (#26), Olivia Newton-John is second with 28 weeks at No.1 (#19), and Kylie Minogue has notched up 31 weeks to sit at #17 on the overall listings.
The entire Top 3 stays stable this week, with Birdy spending a third consecutive week at No.2 with “Skinny Love” and last weeks highest new entry at No.3 of “I Cry” for Flo Rida stays put this week. There is also a little shuffling going on in the next three tracks, as “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” for Taylor Swift rises back up one place to No.4, and also up one spot to spend a third broken week at it’s peak of No.5 is Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen with “Good Times”. Dropping also is Justice Crew who fall two places to No.6 with “Boom Boom”.
After two weeks at No.7, it’s a second week at No.8 now for The Script and Will.i.am with “Hall of Fame”. Maroon 5 drop two places to No.9 with “One More Night” and down a spot to No.10 are the Far East Movement with “Turn up the Love”.
Debuting at No.7 this week is the worldwide dance sensation by South Korean K-Pop artist Psy and his track “Gangnam Style”. It debuts with two digital entries, a #13 debut for the song, and a #30 entry for the clip. The song went to No.1 in his home country in late July, and is currently at the top of the Danish and Finland charts, having just debuted this past week inside the US and UK charts. “Gangnam Style” refers to the affluent and trendy area of Seoul, Psy comparing it to Beverly Hills, California.
NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: With “Mind Your Manners” for Chiddy Bang holding at No.11, the first new peak of the week is Ne-Yo with “Let Me Love You”, up seven places to No.17, followed right behind at No.18 by Rita Ora and her (now) second Top 20 hit “R.I.P.”, up five places this week.
“Primadonna” for Marina & The Diamonds continues to climb the ARIA Singles chart, this week up eight places to No.22, she also appeared on last Sunday’s repeat of Graham Norton performing this song. Last weeks No.46 debut of “Bom Bom” for Sam & The Womp, jumps up twelve places to No.34, whilst up five places to No.36 is “Heatwave” by another UK act Wiley. Joining the Top 50 for the first time are Of Monsters and Men with “Little Talks”, up twenty-four places from last weeks debut of No.66 to No.42 this week.
DOWN DOWN: After one week back in the Top 10 at No.10, Florence + the Machine drop down two places to No.12 with the “Spectrum (Say My Name)” EP. “Drunk” by Ed Sheeran drops out of the Top 20, down five places to No.23, as “Feel the Love” for Rudimental falls nine places to No.28, the final Top 20 dropout being “I Won’t Let You Go” for James Morrison, down sixteen places to No.29, that one-week X-Factor performance helping last week, but his national tour is at the end of the month, so we might not have seen the last of this song inside the Top 20.
After jumping to new peaks last week the tracks “Fast Car” (HP-28) for Taio Cruz and “Want U Back” (HP-36) for Cher Lloyd drop to No.40 and No.43 respectively. Mumford & Sons see “I Will Wait” fall seven places to No.44, and Train drops twelve spots to No.46 with “50 Ways to Say Goodbye” (HP-16).
Alicia Keys releases her fifth album “Girl on Fire” in late November, and the title track debuts at No.25 featuring Nicki Minaj as guest vocalist. This is Alicia’s fifteenth Top 100 entry in Australia, her last being a month ago as guest vocalist on the 50 Cent track “New Day” (HP-44, August 2012).
Timomatic recently debuted at No.3 with his first self-titled album, this week it’s sitting at No.30, but the fourth single from the album debuts at No.27 this week entitled “Incredible”. His last single “Can you feel it” (HP-18, TW-100) debuted at No.25, so this song could go higher, plus it’s being used in several advertisements at the moment.
And talking of advertising helping a song back into the chart, “Mad World” (HP-28, August 2004) by Michael Andrews featuring Gary Jules returns to the Top 100 this week at No.39. Originally in 1983 the song was a No.12 debut hit for Tears for Fears, in 2004 it was redone in a slower style for the haunting film ‘Donnie Darko’. Then in February of 2008 the song was used in two separate occasions (S.Y.T.Y.C.D. and Captain Snooze ads) where it rose back up to No.50. This time around it’s being used to heavily promote the upcoming drama series ‘Underground: The Julian Assange Story’ on Channel 10.
Lower 50: “Rack City” for Tyga keeps slowly climbing, this week it’s up five places to a new peak of No.56. “I Love it” for Icona Pop entered the NZ Top 10 this past week, and here in Australia it leaps thirty-five places to No.61. Local act The Rubens climb up eight places to a new peak of No.63 for their rock track “My Gun”, and after entering several times, Jay-Z and Kayne West’s “Ni**as in Paris” climbs to a new peak of No.66, up thirteen places this week.
Three songs return to the Top 100 this week, “We Found Love” (HP-2) for Rihanna at No.72, which she performed at the closing ceremonies of the Paralympics this past week. “Vegas Girl” (HP-75) for Conor Maynard returns at No.83 and former No.2 single from the start of the year “Lonely Boy” for The Black Keys is back in at No.96.
UK duo Rizzle Kicks enters at No.52 with their UK debut single from July 2011 “Down with the Trumpets” (UK #8). Earlier this year they made it to No.56 with their third single (overseas) entitled “Mama Do the Hump”.
Kanye West’s record label GOOD Music releases the compilation album “Cruel Summer” this week, and the second (of four overseas) tracks released from the album enters the ARIA Singles chart this week. “Clique” enters at No.58 for Kanye with guests Big Sean and Jay-Z, and it features vocal samples of James Brown’s song “Funky President (People its Bad)” and was preceded by #60 song “Mercy” for Kanye, Big Sean, Pusha T & 2 Chainz.
Native metalcore band Parkway Drive are set to release their fourth album at the end of October entitled “Atlas”. The first track from that album debuts at No.71 entitled “Dark Days”. Also releasing an album in October, this one mid month, her third entitled “The Haunted Man”, is UK singer Bat for Lashes who debuts at No.91 with the track “Laura”, her first entry in Australia.
