Astro Labe, the Hobart DJ who head-butted former Prime Minister Tony Abbott in September 2017, has been sentenced to six months in jail.

Labe pleased guilty to the charge of “causing harm to a Commonwealth public official”. He committed the crime in Hobart on 21 September 2017.

The incident made global headlines. John Oliver mentioned it on his show.

The 38 year old DJ will be eligible for parole in two months. He has also been ordered to undergo drug and alcohol counselling. He has also been fined $2000 and must not commit another offence for two years.

Labe had been drinking before the incident. When he approached Abbott, the ex-PM went in for a handshake but instead was treated to a headbutting. Labe was heard saying “you fucking deserved it”.

Shortly after being identified, Labe was asked why he did it. His answer was because “I didn’t think it was an opportunity I’d get again”.
