Jimmy Barnes introduces two new songs at One Electric Day

After a year of laying his heart on the line with the ‘Working Class Boy’ book, tour and movie, Jimmy Barnes is prepped to return to the rock show for 2019.

As the headliner for One Electric Day 2018, Jimmy gave the audience a taste of what the shows will become in 2019 with a couple of new songs to get fans ready for new music in the new year (maybe).

‘Criminal Record’, the first of the two new songs in the set, debuted on the ‘Working Class Boy’ tour but here we were hearing it for the first time as a full on rock song. Don Walker wrote ‘Criminal Record’ and it is very Chisel blues, so at this stage I’m not sure if its destined for a solo record or another Chisel record.

The other new song was ‘They’re Shutting Down Our Town’. It is about the town of Elizabeth in South Australia where Jimmy grew up and much of the Working Class Boy stories took place. ‘They’re Shutting Down Our Town’ is a classic sounding Barnes rocker.

A new Barnes solo album of original songs will be a welcome addition to new music in 2018. Jimmy’s last original song album was 2010’s Rage and Ruin.

The Living End’s Chris Cheney was waiting in the shadows at this gig. Chris joined Jimmy for ‘Lay Down Your Guns’ and ‘Rising Sun’. The Living End and Jimmy Barnes will perform of series one of Red Hot Summer with Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Diesel, Richard Clapton and Chocolate Starfish in 2019. Red Hot Summer, another fine production from One Electric Day creator Duane McDonald, starts January 12 in Mannum, South Australia.

This was a special show with three generations of Barnes on stage. Jimmy and Jane’s granddaughter Ruby scored a gig as a backing singer for part of the show. Jimmy’s daughter Eliza-Jane Barnes also joined him for a rare Barnes performance of ‘When Something Is Wrong With My Baby’.

Jimmy’s arrangement of his Dylan cover ‘Seven Days’ had an interesting AC/DC sounding feel to it on the show. Then three songs later, Jimmy was covering ‘High Voltage’, played with a very similar riff. As AC/DC haven’t performed the song since Bon died, hearing a Barnes version gave the audience an inkling of what a Barnes led AC/DC may have sounded had be accepted the job back in 1980.

Jimmy Barnes plays a lot so you know quality will have a consistency. This show differed from the two new shows because of the AC/DC cover, the Chis Cheney guest spot and a little girl who might just be the biggest star on the planet 20 years from now.
