“Ding dong Tony is dead” proclaimed a grinning John Oliver on the Emmy Red Carpet, obviously unaware he was saying it to Bronwyn Bishop’s daughter Angela Bishop.
Angela is the entertainment report for Network 10 and is in Hollywood covering the Emmy Awards as part of her regular work. Comedy newsman Oliver had just been in Australia and was fully aware of the Abbott sentiment in Australia so was well educated on the topic, just not the interviewer.
Angela has never flaunted her family background and did not prompt Oliver into action. He immediately went into Abbott mode as soon as Angela mentioned that he had recently been in Australia.
“I was in Melbourne when he tried that crazy border security thing, “Oliver said. Border Force, yes the Aussistarzi. Amazing”.
Angela asked John if he would be thanking Australia for the amount of material we have given the comedian “I will thank Australia right now. I don’t know what the point of Tony Abbott was but it was fun while it lasted. It was like taking heroin. It was incredibly exhilarating but it was right that you stopped,” he said.
Angela then pointed out to Oliver that Donald Trump could become President of the United States. “I don’t think they are going to elect him. You did elect Tony Abbott.” “But as a comedian doesn’t a part of you wish he does get elected President?,” she asked. “No, because I am a human being as well and I don’t really want to deal with the human consequences of that as well just for half an hour of fun a week”.
