Josh Groban has covered the Academy Award winning Glen Hansard song ‘Falling Slowly’ on his new album ‘All That Echoes’.
Talking to Noise11.com, Josh said, “That song, kind of plain and simple, was a song that when I first heard it I couldn’t wait to sing”.
Hansard wrote and recorded the song with Marketa Irglova for the movie ‘Once’. Hansard and Irglova also starred in the film. “I first heard it when the movie came out and won the Oscar,” Josh said. “Like any of us, when you hear a great song like that for the first time it just doesn’t leave your mind”.
Groban wanted to record the song years ago but held back. “I always felt it was too soon to sing it,” he said. “When you are singing a cover you want to make sure it is relevant in some way. You want to bring it to a new audience or do something different with it. Sometimes you just love the song but you don’t have any inspiration to what you would do differently to it”.
Josh’s producer Rob Cavallo suggested the time was right to record the Hansard song when they entered the studio to start work on ‘All That Echoes’. “This was a situation where I had Rob Cavallo in the studio, it had been 8 or 9 or 10 years since the movie had some out and we felt it was time. This is a good time to do it. It was on Broadway now and I’ve always loved the song. It was always a great pleasure to listen to so I couldn’t wait to put my voice on it. It was a little bit of a no-brainer. I heard it, recorded it and went ‘yep, its pretty great’”.
Josh thinks Glen has heard his version of the song. “I believe he has. We have emailed back and forth a little bit. He is such a nice guy. I am fairly certain he had to sign off on it. I am hoping to write with him for the next record he is such an uber talent”.
‘All That Echoes’ was released through Warner Music this week.
