While introducing DJ Avicii at Miami’s Ultra Music Festival, Madonna asked the crowd “How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?”

Outspoken electro producer Deadmau5 took it to be a slang reference to party drug MDMA, better known as ecstasy, and used Facebook to criticise Madonna for perpetuating the stereotype of the electronic music scene’s dependence on drugs.

Madonna did her “one day of Twitter” to plug her new album MDNA and responded to Deadmau5’s criticism by posting an old photo of her in mouse ears and a speech bubble which reads: “From one mouse to another, I don’t support drug use and I never have. I was referring to the song called ‘Have You Seen Molly’ written by my friend Cedric Gervais who I almost worked with on my album.”

Deadmau5 tweeted back, “@MadonnaMDNAday sure. regardless, just be a little more aware of what you *should* represent at EDM events, and ill watch my mouth.”

Madonna came back with “Communication is always best. You should have called me first, we could have cleared it up ‘privately.’ ;) See you on the road.”

Then Deadmau5 wrapped it up by tweeting, “well there you have it kids. i’ve said what i needed to say, which ill still stand by, and so did she. life goes on. no more talk of that.”
