As part of their celebration of sixty years of British charts, the Official Chart Company has been surveying the biggest selling artists of the era.Last week, they named Elvis Presley the top selling male artist by a slim margin over Cliff Richard, but the race is nowhere near as close on the female side.

Madonna is the top selling female artist of the last sixty years in Britain with 17.8 million in sales, over six million more than second place Rihanna who has 11.4 million. Kylie Minogue is third as the only other artist in the ten-million-plus category with 10.2 million.

Amazingly, with all the wonderful British female vocalists over the last sixty years, there is not one Brit in the top ten. One is from Canada (Celine Dion), one from Barbados (Rihanna), two from Australia (Minogue and Olivia Newton-John) and the other six from the U.S.

The top ten with their sales and biggest U.K. hit:

  1. Madonna (17.8 million, Into the Groove)
  2. Rihanna (11.4 million, We Found Love (Featuring Calvin Harris))
  3. Kylie Minogue (10.2 million, Can’t Get You Out of My Head)
  4. Whitney Houston (8.5 million, I Will Always Love You)
  5. Lady Gaga (7.329 million, Poker Face)
  6. Britney Spears (7.324 million, Baby One More Time)
  7. Beyonce (6.9 million, If I Were a Boy)
  8. Celine Dion (6.7 million, My Heart Will Go On)
  9. Mariah Carey (6.62 million, All I Want For Xmas is You)
  10. Olivia Newton-John (6.61 million, You’re the One That I Want (with John Travolta))
