Manic Street Preachers will perform in Melbourne in June and Sydney in July on the night before the British Lions play the Australian Wallabies.

“As massive rugby fans the chance to visit one of our favourite countries – play some gigs and watch the British and Irish Lions play Australia is an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity,” the band said in a statement. “ We can’t wait to play a selection of our greatest hits to our Australian fans and the thousands of Lions fans travelling down under. It should be an amazing and memorable few shows.”

Manic Street Preachers took 2012 off. Their last shows were in the UK in December 2011. So far they only have one other live date scheduled headlining Festival No 6 in Portmeiron, Wales in September.

The two Manic Street Preachers Australian shows will be supported by Hungry Kids of Hungary.

Tickets will go on sale on Friday May 10 at 10am.

Dates are:

June 28, Melbourne, Festival Hall
July 5, Sydney, Hordern Pavilion
