British singer and comedian Max Bygraves has died at the age of 89.

The veteran entertainer had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and had kept a low profile after migrating to Australia in 2008 to be near his family.

Bygraves died at his daughter’s home on Hope Island in Queensland.

Walter William Bygraves OBE was born on October 16 1922 in London.

Max Bygraves became a popular entertainer for the Royal Family and appeared on 20 Royal Variety Performances. His first Royal Variety Performance was for King George VI in 1950.

In 1952 he had his first chart hit. ‘Cowpuncher’s Cantana’ reached #6 on the UK chart. Max Bygraves would go on to have 16 Top 40 hits in the UK/

In 1982, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II.

Max and his wife Gladys moved to Bournemouth in Queensland in 2008. Gladys died in 2011, at age 88.
