Melbourne Hip-Hop artist JJay De Melo has died after drowning while swimming at the Mornington Peninsula on Tuesday.

De Melo is the 20th drowning victim at Victorian beaches this summer.

The Hip-Hip artist was about to have the biggest show of his career this weekend opening the US act Tyga at Melbourne’s Festival Hall.

De Melo was at Bushrangers Bay on Tuesday when he got into trouble while swimming. His body was found 90 minutes later. He was unable to be resuscitated.

73 people have drowned across Australian beaches this summer. That is almost double the figure from the previous year.
