Music Week report that retailer HMV have tallied the demand for the performers’ work the day before and after their appearances at the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics and, unsurprisingly, there was a marked difference.

The biggest beneficiary of the appearance is Mike Oldfield, whose Tubular Bells sales went up a whopping 757%. Next was Underworld, whose Best Of was selling 500% more. Frank Turner’s most recent album England Keep My Bones shot up 371% and Dizzee Rascal’s latest Tongue N’ Cheek went up 356%.

Other artists to earn a spike in sales include Paul McCartney, the Sex Pistols, Arctic Monkeys, David Bowie, Emeli Sande, and the Chariots Of Fire soundtrack by Vangelis, which sold 76% more than the day before.

The double-CD Olympics compilation Isles Of Wonder is certain to be number one in the UK at the next chart. We’ll take any opportunity to post a Frank Turner tune. ‘I Still Believe’ is the first song on the compilation.
