CBGB’s To Become An Airport Restaurant

CBGB very well may be the United States version of the U.K.’s Cavern Club.

A long list of artists cut their teeth in the fabled Manhattan East Village venue including the Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie, Television, Patti Smith, Joan Jett, the Misfits and many, many more. Unfortunately, the club found itself closed in 2006 after they could not negotiate a proper rent agreement with the property owners.

Since then, the original owner, Hilly Kristal died and family members fought over the reported $3 million estate but any plans to resurrect the CBGB name has ended….until now.

While most CBGB fans would like to see a new club resurrect the name or even a chain ala the Hard Rock, what they are getting almost sounds like a cruel joke.

The CBGB name and legacy will be part of a brand new restaurant that will be opening in the United Airlines Terminal C at Newark Airport.

Yes, an airport. The bastion of overpriced, mediocre food is where the legacy will now lie so, starting possibly before the end of the year, you will be able to eat “American fare in a fun environment recalling the legendary music venue.” That translates to $9 deviled eggs, an $11.50 wedge salad, and a $14 cheeseburger. Wow, what fun!

Oh, and as for musical flavorings on the menu, how about digging into some “Disco Fries” because, you know, CBGB was such a hot stop on the Disco music circuit.

Thanks, but we’ll remember the CBGB of the 70’s and 80’s and not the bastardization of the great name.
