The funeral for Stevie Wright will be a public affair to be held in Sydney on January 8, 2016.

Details of the venue for Stevie’s memorial will be made available over the next 24 hours. Friends, fans and family of Stevie are invited to join in the celebration of his life.

The legendary Stevie Wright of The Easybeats passed away in the New South Wales south coast town of Moruya on December 27 at the age of 68. In the past few days some in the media have falsely reported that Stevie had died from drug use. That is incorrect. While a heavy user in the 70s and 80s Wright had been drug and alcohol free for more than a decade. The official cause of death was pneumonia.

Stevie Wright was Australia’s first international rock star following the success of The Easybeats song ‘Friday On My Mind’ in Australia, the USA and UK in 1966.

Stevie was also a main songwriter of The Easybeats with George Young and co-wrote the songs ‘She’s So Fine’, ‘Come And See Her’, ‘Wedding Ring’, ‘I’ll Make You Happy’, ‘Sorry’ and ‘For My Woman’.

Following the break-up of The Easybeats Wright delivered two of Australia’s greatest rock albums of the 70s ‘Hard Rock’ (1974) and ‘Black-Eyed Bruiser’ (1975) both featuring his former Easybeats mates Harry Vanda and George Young and George’s brother Malcolm Young of AC/DC.

Alberts CEO David Albert knew Stevie for the last 15 years. In a statement he said, “Stevie will be sadly missed by all who knew him and countless more who did not know him but loved his music. We have lost one of Australia’s greatest front men who has left an indelible mark on our musical landscape. He has always been a much loved part of the Alberts family.”

Stevie died peacefully after becoming ill on December 26. His son Nick and former partner Fay Walker were by his side when he passed.
