Nine Inch Nails, Queens of The Stone Age, Brody Dalle Play Melbourne

Queens of the Stone Age formed in 1996, but Josh Homme had already passed veteran performer stage after forming Kyuss in 1987.

Nine Inch Nails formed in 1988 giving Trent Reznor a 26-year history this year.

Brody Dalle was playing around Melbourne in 1993 and moved to Los Angeles where she formed The Distillers, then Spinerette and now fronts her solo band.Brody Dalle, Photo By Ros O'Gorman

The point is there is a lot of experience wrapped up in these three acts and back to back at Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne, they each delivered incredible but totally different performances.

Dalle could be the illegitimate daughter of Lemmy. While she was given the 30 minute opening slot she channeled Motorhead over a powerful, speed-metal showcased focused on her new record ‘Diploid Love’ plus a few blasts from her bands of the past.

QOTSA, Photo By Ros O'GormanQueens of the Stone Age were up next. John Homme and Trent Reznor flip a coin for the headline slot on the current tour every night. Reznor won. Then again Homme may have just wanted to head out early to watch his wife Brody Dalle play a Melbourne pub gig later that night.

Queens of the Stone Age are good for a reason. They work hard, perform regularly, play a lot and they just got good from loads of training. Watching QOTSA now is to watch this band at its peak. Australia has seen this band a lot over the years. Afterall, Homme has to visit the in-laws.

Every QOTSA album has been a hit in Australia. The latest ‘…Like Clockwork’ was their first Aussie no. 1. It is therefore not surprising that a QOTSA setlist sounds like a greatest hits show. It now is.

Nine Inch Nails, Photo Ros O'GormanNine Inch Nails are also the essence of what a live band should be. Trent Reznor tours a lot and like Queens he is always touring. The highlights for NIN were his two songs with his wife Mariqueen Maandig of How To Destroy Angels and his masterpiece ‘Hurt’, once covered by country music legend Johnny Cash.

Kraftwerk Beam Down Into Melbourne Captain’s Log Stardate 0812230830pm #REVIEW

I wasn’t quite prepared for the “strap in and enjoy the ride’ experience of Kraftwerk. I hadn’t seen them live since the Big Day Out of 2003. It was still light when they came in, in the tent (not the outdoor stage) and they were wearing suits. Someone at the time commented that it was like watching four businessmen in the Qantas Club sending emails to each other.

At one point Jackson Browne commented how he “doesn’t think of himself as 75 and doesn’t think of his beard as grey” but that is what a lifetime of success will do to you. For many people in the room (including myself) who started the Jackson Browne journey with his first album in 1972, this show delivered a deep dive across the entire career.

Paul McCartney Is Getting Better All The Time At Most Likely His Last Ever Melbourne Show #Review

The Beatles played six concerts in Melbourne on that one and only Australian tour of 1964, two shows each on the 15, 16 and 17th of June. The next time Paul was in Melbourne was for two Wings concerts on 13 and 14 November, 1975. There were two MCG concerts on 9 and 10 March, 1993, and two AAMI Park shows on 6 and 7 December, 2017. 21 October, 2023 at Marvel Stadium was special. It was the 13th and most likely the last time Sir Paul McCartney will ever perform in Melbourne, Australia.
