Paula Cole Sues For Unpaid Royalties

It took Paula Cole a long time to get the accounting for the royalties she was owed by Warner Brothers and Imago Records and, now that she has them, she’s not happy.

The singer is planning on suing the two companies claiming that the numbers she was provided make no sense and that she could be owed up to $1 million in back royalties.

Cole’s I Don’t Want to Wait was used as the theme for the popular teen drama Dawson’s Creek back in the late-90’s and early-00’s. According to TMZ, her lawsuit demands an accurate accounting of the use of her songs not only in Dawson’s Creek but in all other film and TV ventures. She is also looking to gain control of her back catalog of music.

Paula’s website is currently trumpeting the release of a new album, 7; however, even though it says a spring release, the album has only been made available in an “artists’ run” of 200 copies.

Cole made her first major impact as Peter Gabriel’s backup singer and stage partner during his Secret World tour, playing at Woodstock ’99 and on the DVD of the trek. She released her first solo album, Harbinger, in 1994 and had two major hits from the follow-up set, This Fire, with Where Have All the Cowboys Gone? (1997 / #8 / #27 Adult Contemporary) and I Don’t Want to Wait (1997 / #11 / #3 Adult Contemporary). The hits led to her winning the Best New Artist at the 1998 Grammy Awards.
