Philip Seymour Hoffman, the Academy Award winning actor, has been found dead from a suspected heroine overdose in his Manhattan apartment. He was 46.

Hoffman’s plain guy look made him a popular character actor as he could pass for either young or old. Hoffman was already a veteran of 15 movies when he landed the role of Scotty J. in ‘Boogie Nights’ (1997).

He then scored many support roles in major movies such as ‘The Big Lebowski’ (1998), ‘Magnolia’ (1999), ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’ (1999) and ‘Almost Famous’ (2000).

Hoffman’s starring role as Truman Capote in ‘Capote’ (2005) was his finest role. It earned Philip Seymour Hoffman the Academy Award for Best Actor.

In 2008 he played Father Brendan Flynn in the controversial ‘Doubt’, a film about a priests suspected relationship with student in the Catholic Church.

2009 saw Hoffman in a starring role in ‘The Boat That Rocked’ (retitled Pirate Radio) for the USA. He played DJ The Count on a pirate radio station set on a ship off the coast of France broadcasting rock music into Britain before commercial licenses were issued in the UK.

Hoffman’s most recent work was as Plutarch Heavensbee in ‘The Hunger Games’ movies. He was working on the next movies ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingay – Part 1’ for release later this year and The Hunger Games: Mockingay – Part 2’ due in 2015.

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s body was discovered by his assistant with a needle in his arm. Hoffman had been a heroine addict in his early 20s and recently returned to his habit.

He leaves behind partner Mimi O’Donnell, son Cooper (10), and daughters Tallulah (7) and Willa (5).
