Gavin Ryan reports on the biggest selling ARIA albums of 2013.

ARIA End of Year Chart Review for 2013 (Albums)

1 – The Truth About Love – PINK
With a national tour that stretched out for almost three months, plus several Top 10 singles lifted from the album, Pink and her sixth studio album “The Truth About Love” became the first ever album to score the No.1 spot on the ARIA End of Year Charts two years running, as it was also the 2012 No.1 album. Adele almost did it last year, when she scored 2011’s #1 and 2012’s #3 position, and this becomes the third EOY chart that Pink has taken out the top spot, as the 2010 chart saw her “Greatest Hits… So Far” take top honors, that album was the 19th biggest for 2013. Pink also had the #2 of the year in 2006, 2007 (I’m Not Dead), 2008 and 2009 (Funhouse), and album “The Truth About Love” spent five broken weeks at No.1 during 2013, the first week of the year, then one week in July, two in August and a final single week again in September.

2 – Prism – KATY PERRY
Back in 2010, Pink and Susan Boyle had the top two albums for the year, and now again we have two female artists scoring the top two again, as Katy Perry’s fourth album “Prism” takes out the No.2 spot for 2013, helped by the massive pre-hit “Roar” which was the No.1 song for 2013. “Prism” debuted at No.1 in the first week of November and has not been lower than No.5 in its nine weeks within the Top 5 so far. This becomes Katy’s highest EOY placing, and her second Top 10 spot, as “Teenage Dream” made it to No.10 in 2010, that album making its fourth consecutive EOY placing at No.89 for 2013.

3 – Unorthodox Jukebox – BRUNO MARS
The second album for Bruno Mars spent three weeks at No.1 during January 2013, and it racked up thirty-weeks (in 2013) within the Top 10, dropping no lower than No.13 and leaving the Top 20 at the end of September. During the year his first album continued to chart, with “Doo-Wops and Hooligans” taking the No.55 position for 2013. This album was No.38 for 2012, and this is his second EOY Top 10 placing as Doo-Wops made it to No.3 for 2011.

4 – To Be Loved – MICHAEL BUBLE
The album with the longest run at No.1 during 2013 was Michael Buble’s “To Be Loved” which stayed atop for five weeks from April 22nd. In fact the album has spent only seven weeks within the Top 10, at only two chart spots, #1 and #7. The album will be charting for much of 2014, as his national tour here is coming later in the year, and this album becomes Michael’s eighth EOY Top 10 placing, as he took the #1 spot in 2007 with “Call Me Irresponsible”, whilst he also has another in this years Top 10.

5 – Random Access Memories – DAFT PUNK
This album was launched in the NSW outback town of Woy Woy, at their annual fair, but that’s what Daft Punk do, something unexpected. R.A.M. debuted at the top of the ARIA Albums chart at the end of May, staying atop for two weeks becoming their first No.1 album in Australia, and this album now becomes their highest EOY placing, as previously their “Discovery” album made #100 for 2001 and then “Alive 2007” made it to No.86 for 2008.

6 – Midnight Memories – ONE DIRECTION
The third No.1 album for teen-pop sensation One Direction lands at No.6 for 2013, having debuted at No.1 in the first week of December, plus it became the No.1 selling album in the UK for 2013. With their massive national tour, it helped their previous albums to make EOY Top 50 placings, with “Take Me Home” (#8, 2012) landing at No.42 and their debut set “Up All Night” (#47, 2011 and #2, 2013) landing at No.50.

7 – Christmas – MICHAEL BUBLE
The first album in ARIA Chart history {1983-2013} (and only one since ‘Grease’) to land at No.1 for a third time occurred this December, when the festive season album “Christmas” went to the top for three weeks, pushing the album to a total of twelve weeks at the top. Michael’s “Christmas” album landed at No.2 for 2011 and then it was the No.4 album in 2012, giving Michael his ninth EOY Top 10 placing, as his eighth is back up at No.4 for this year.

8 – The Marshall Mathers LP 2 – EMINEM
Spending two weeks at No.1 from mid-November, the eighth studio album for Eminem became his eighth No.1 album, with the first edition of this album making it the twelfth biggest album for 2001. This is the fifth EOY Top 10 placing for Eminem, as he took the No.1 spot for 2002 with “The Eminem Show”.

9 – Pure Heroine – LORDE
The debut album for New Zealand teenager Lorde lands the ninth biggest selling album for 2013, helped by the singles “Royals”, “Tennis Court” and “Team”, with the album debuting at the top of the charts at the start of October, and the album has not left the Top 10 since its initial entry.

10 – All the Little Lights – PASSENGER
The only album within the Top 10 that didn’t make it to No.1, although it did try as it went to No.2 for four broken weeks (three in April, one week in August). Helped by his tour here with Ed Sheeran in March, the album places higher than Ed’s “+” which landed a few places lower at No.12 for 2013.

The highest placed Aussie act for 2013 is the self-titled album for Flume at No.11, followed at No.15 by the collection “Willy Nilly – The 12th Man’s Biggest Hits” for The Twelfth Man, whilst one place lower at No.16 are Human Nature with “The Christmas Album”. X-Factor winner Dami Im sees her self-titled album land at No.17, whilst runner-up Taylor Henderson scores the No.20 position for 2013. The Voice winner Harrison Craig is at No.22 with his debut album “More Than a Dream” followed eleven places lower at No.33 by Russell Morris’ “Sharkmouth”. Bliss N’ Eso see their July No.1 album “Circus in the Sky” land at No.34 for 2013, whilst Troy Cassar-Daly and Adam Harvey with “The Great Country Songbook” scoring No.35 for 2013.

Birds of Tokyo went to No.1 in March with their aptly titled album “March Fires”, the album gaining the No.37 album for 2013, whilst the comeback (?) album for Tina Arena. “Reset” is at No.39 for 2013, one place lower at No.40 is the first Triple J No.1 album “Like a Version 9”. Keith Urban saw his “Fuse” album debut at the top in September, and it scores the No.43 album for 2013, with “The Very Best of” for INXS which came out in 2011 lands its first EOY placing at No.44. Guy Sebastian sees his “Armageddon” album place at No.46 for 2013 (which was #9 for 2012), with further Aussie acts in the lower 50 being Bernard Fanning (#54), Boy & Bear (#57), Jessica Mauboy (#61), Keith Urban (Story So Far) (#74), Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (#83), Neil Finn & Paul Kelly (#88), Tame Impala (#90), The Rubens (#96) and Hillsong Live gaining their third ever Top 100 placing, as “Glorious Ruins” is at No.94 for 2013.

Fleetwood Mac land two albums in the 2013 EOY chart with “25 Years – The Chain” at No.14 and their 1977 album “Rumours” scoring the #78 position. It might have only spent two weeks on the charts at the end of the year, but the self-titled fifth album for Beyonce lands at No.23, whilst “The Great Gatsby” is the highest placed soundtrack at No.27. Further soundtracks come from “Pitch Perfect” (#29), “Les Miserables” (#49), and The Sapphires” (#71) then the other Greatest Hits sets to chart on the EOY list come from The Bee Gees (#30), Ricky Martin (#45), Bon Jovi (#47), Guns N’ Roses (#70), Red Hot Chili Peppers (#81) and finally Nickelback (#82).
