Red Hot Chili Peppers Up In The Air About Next Producer

Red Hot Chili Peppers are about 30 songs into their next album and are still yet to bring in a producer. Could this mark the first Red Hot Chili Peppers without Rick Rubin in 23 years?

Rubin produced the 1991 classic ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik’ and every Red Hot Chili Peppers record since.

Guitarist Josh Klinghoffer joined Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2009 and featured on their last album ‘I’m With You’ (2011). He says the band has been busy in the studio and well down the track of recording the next record despite not having a producer just yet.

“The Chili Peppers are working every day writing,” Klinghoffer tells Noise11.com. “We have produced a more elaborate demo stage into the writing, at least more than the band has before. Flea owns a really great studio now. I’ve been recording and writing with the Chili Peppers every day”.

That elaborate demo has generated around 30 songs to date. “We’ve written musically 30 songs now,” he says. “We sort of did this last time, which was my first album. We piled a shitload of stuff on Anthony and he actually came through. He wrote lyrics to 50 songs in the end. We recorded 50 last time. We released an extra 17 that didn’t go on the album. We are conscious to not do that again but we are already up to 28 or 30 songs”.

Normally former producer Rick Rubin would be working with the band by this stage but he has yet to walk through the studio door leading us to speculate that Red Hot Chili Peppers may have an alternative to Rubin for the first time in two decades. “Yeah, yeah, well … that’s not even 100% official yet,” Klinghoffer says. “That is sort of up in the air still. Normally he becomes involved in the arranging process but he hasn’t yet been which is good for me. I like it the way we are doing it so far. There has not been an official producer named yet so in the absence of that you never know what could happen”.

While Red Hot Chili Peppers continue working on the next album Klinghoffer will release two albums this year with his other band Dot Hacker. ‘How’s Your Process (Work)’ is out now. ‘How’s Your Process (Play) will be released in October.
