At the BigSound music conference in Queensland, Earle said that he has decided to write his memoirs to earn money to pay for medical attention for his two-year old son who is autistic. He said insurance in the USA does not cover the condition and despite have vowed before not to write a memoir he says he has changed his mind for his son.

“I have never done anything for money before but I’m doing a few things now. I don’t think I’ll go to hell for it,” Steve said.

“The people I feel sorry for are those who have kids (with autism) but no insurance,” he said,

In his BigSound keynote interview Steve Earle also said that he used to have a problem with people who sell their music for ads and like Neil Young said he’d never do it “but then I had an epiphany and realised Neil had been rich since he was 20 and I wasn’t”.

Steve revealed his next album will be out in early 2013 and will be at SXSW next year.

BigSound will continue in Brisbane until September 14.
