The Age Music Victoria Music Awards were announced Wednesday night at the Melbourne Recital Centre and once again confirmed why Melbourne is Australia’s music capital.

The work done by Music Victoria and supported by the Andrews Labor Government has accelerated growth in Victoria’s music industry for export and tourism and that was obvious from the nominations and winners this year.

The international success of nominees Courtney Barnett and Vance Joy, the development of great new acts such as multiple award winners Baker Boy and Sampa the Great and the recognition of the diversity of the local industry from Baker Boy’s rap, folk artist Michael Waugh to the soul of Sampa the Great and punk from Little Ugly Girls demonstrated how far the Victorian music industry has come since the appointment of Patrick Donovan as CEO of Music Victoria.

The Age Music Victoria Music Awards is not the money grab of pop awards setting up Christmas sales. These awards include all sectors of the music industry. They don’t exclude. The purity of The Age Music Victoria Awards recognizes the very heart and soul of the music business.

Music Victoria CEO, Patrick Donovan said, “Congratulations to all of the winners and nominees and thanks to the awards partners, artists and MCs for the amazing performances on the night. It really encapsulated the quality and diversity of Victorian music in 2018.”
