in Live,News

Iconic Irish band The Chieftains will get together with the legendary Ry Cooder will host The Celtic Sessions, four days and nights in New York in July, 2014 with master classes, Q&A and a rare performance.

Cooder and The Chieftains have confirmed The Celtic Sessions will take place at the Gideon Putnam Resort in Saratoga Springs, New York from July 7 to 11.

Chieftains founder Paddy Moloney will offer master classes in traditional Irish music and instruments and conduct breakout classes on songwriting and traditional Irish dance. There will also be a rare jam with the musicians and Ry Cooder.

The Chieftains have been around for 53 years and have released 58 albums. They have won six Grammy Awards from 18 Grammy nominations.

Cooder is also a six times Grammy Award winner and has received two doctorates in music from Queen’s University in Canada and the California Institute of the Arts.

In 1997 he produced the Buena Vista Social Club album. Two years later Wim Wenders directed the documentary of the union and the film was nominated for an Academy Award.

Cooder calls the union with the Chieftains “the ringmaster and the sad clown”.

“Paddy fits in everywhere he goes, and I do my level best to fit in with him when I get the opportunity,” says Cooder, “We’re the old-timers now, the ringmaster and the sad clown. We know a thing or two.”
