The Veronicas ‘You Ruin Me’ is the number on song in Australia.

The lead single from the November due self-titled third album by Brisbane twins known as The Veronicas entitled “You Ruin Me” leaps straight in at No.1 on the ARIA Singles chart this week, becoming the duos second No.1 in Australia.

“You Ruin Me” becomes the 1024th No.1 single in Australia (1940 to 2014) and the 459th No.1 for ARIA (1983 to 2014), plus for this year it’s the fourth by an Australian act, the second for the Sony (local) label after Justice Crew back in May, the second No.1 single for a Brisbane act (Sheppard were the other band in April) and the second chart-topping single by a duo who are also twins this year, with The Madden Brothers being the other siblings to reach No.1 back in July.

This is the first time that the word ‘Ruin’ has featured at the top, but the 69th No.1 single appearance for the word ‘Me’, with the girls’ previous No.1 “Hook Me Up” also containing the word, that song hit No.1 for a single week back in November 2007. Plus the duo becomes only the fourth such act to achieve two or more No.1 singles, the other being The Carpenters (3), LMFAO (2) and the only other local duo to achieve two being Savage Garden back in 1997. The Veronicas’ new No.1 also becomes the 158th song to hit the top by an Australian act, and only the third song this year to debut at the top first week, the other two being “Sing” by Ed Sheeran (5-May) and the following week “Que Sera” for Justice Crew (12-May).

The Veronicas wouldn’t have made it to No.1 if it wasn’t for the release of a companion CD Single, something which doesn’t occur often these days. The difference between the top two was 600 digital sales in favor of Meghan Trainor, but with over 2000 physical sales (as opposed to Meghan selling 200 for her EP ‘Title’) to the Veronicas, they win out this week, which thus pushed “All About That Bass” back down to No.2 after returning for a fourth week last weekend.

Taylor Swift drops back down to No.3 with “Shake it Off”, the song picking up a 2x▲Platinum certification this week, whilst Nathaniel is up one place to a new peak of No.4 with “Live Louder”, which is helped by his X-Factor performance from two weeks ago and the song being in the promo’s for the new season of ‘Dancing with the Stars’, the song also newly certified Gold (●), and the rise in turn pushes “Freaks” for Timmy Trumpet and Savage down a couple of places to No.5.

Redfoo is back down two places to No.6 with his “New Thang” and down a place to No.7 are the trio of Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj performing “Bang Bang”. G.R.L. hold at No.8 with “Ugly Heart” (newly 3x▲Platinum) and climbing a place to a new peak of No.9 is Calvin Harris with John Newman on “Blame”, whilst dropping three to No.10 is French duo Klingande with “Jubel”.

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: With Ed Sheeran in the country to perform at the AFL Grand Final and do a promo tour, his latest single “Thinking Out Loud” blasts up twenty-nine places to No.12; also up to a new peak are Echosmith with “Cool Kids”, climbing to No.13 this week, whilst Sam Smith is up one place to a new chart height at No.16 with “I’m Not the Only One”. Becky G climbs into the Top 20, up three to No.18 with “Shower”, which is now Gold (●) in sales, whilst blasting into the Top 30, up forty-three places from last weeks debut position of No.70 to No.27 this week are Alesso and Tove Lo with “Heroes (We Could Be)”. Fences with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis rise to a new peak of No.33 with “Arrows”, Milky Chance jump back up fourteen places to No.34 with “Stolen Dance” (newly 3x▲Platinum and thanks to it being performed on the X-Factor), whilst The Script are back up thirteen places to No.37 with “Superheroes” (HP-25) now that their new album lands a Top 5 debut this week. Also thanks to an X-Factor performance, Disclosure and Sam Smith leap up forty-eight places to a new peak of No.47 with “Latch”, the song formerly peaked at No.49 back in early February 2013.

DOWN DOWN: After five broken weeks within the Top 10, George Ezra and his song “Budapest” (HP-5) drops back down to No.11 this week, whilst Nicki Minaj is down four to No.15 with “Anaconda” (now ▲Platinum), and Paloma Faith drops down with both of her chart entries, her former No.1 “Only Love Can Hurt Like This” is down seven to No.20 and last weeks debut with Sigma on “Changing” (new UK #1 this week) is down four to No.23. Also scoring Platinum in sales is Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora with “Black Widow” which drops to No.24 this week, whilst Hilary Duff falls six to No.26 with “All About You”. Ed Sheeran’s former Top 10 single “Don’t” is down six to No.35 and Maroon 5 fall eight to No.39 with “Maps”, which picks up Gold (●) in sales, and tumbling fourteen places to No.44 is Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea with “Problems”, and down thirteen to No.46 is Guy Sebastian with “Come Home With Me”. Falling out from last weeks Top 50 include “What Are You Waiting For” by Nickelback (40 to 51), “Happy Little Pill” (now Gold ●) by Troye Sivan (47 to 55), “Please Don’t Say You Love Me” by Gabrielle Aplin (39 to 56), “Oh Cecilia” for The Vamps (46 to 58) and Eminem and Sia with “Guts Over Fear” (45 to 73).

Former NRL player and NRL Footy Show regular Beau Ryan, whose characters include DJ Yallah, has entered at No.19 with his debut single featuring local troupe Justice Crew, the song is entitled “Where You From?”. The other non-XF entry to the Top 50 this week comes in at No.49, the second entry for Ella Henderson entitled “Glow”, whilst her former No.3 single “Ghost” is at No.28 this week.

X-FACTOR: Jason Heerah debuts at No.38 this week with his version of the Disclosure and Sam Smith track “Latch”, whilst a few places lower at No.40 is Dean Ray with his rendition of the Milky Chance former No.2 song “Stolen Dance”, whilst Dean drops twenty-four places to No.67 with “Budapest”. Lower down there are further entries by show performers American Authors with their former No.10 single “Best Day of My Life”, which returns at No.52 also helped by their current tour of the country. Reigan Derry comes in at No.61 with her version of “Dog Days are Over”, with the original by Florence & the Machine returns at No.85. Brother3 come in at No.75 with their cover of the 1989 No.1 single for The Proclaimers “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”, and the other performer on this weeks shows was Ricki-Lee who returns at No.95 with her former No.65 single “Happy Ever After” (more from Ricki later on).

Lower 50: There are only two new peaks in the lower fifty this week, with Havana Brown up a couple of places to No.79 with her new track “Better Not Said” and The Hilltop Hoods rise five to No.80 with “Cosby Sweater”. Apart from the aforementioned returnees of American Authors, Florence & the Machine and Ricki-Lee further tracks to return include current tourist Sara Bareilles with “Brave” at No.87, The Preatures with “Somebody’s Talking” at No.90, Hopium at No.91 with “Dreamers” and another current tourist in the form of Justin Timberlake returns at No.98 with his former No.10 single “Not a Bad Thing”.

Jennifer Lopez teams with Iggy Azalea for the track “Booty”, which comes in at No.59 this week and becomes J-Lo’s 25th Top 100 entry, whilst another Latin act in the form of Enrique Iglesias enters at No.64 with the song “Bailando”, which features Sean Paul, Descember Bueona and Gente de Zona as guest artists.

Michael Wayne Atha is better known as rapper Yelawolf (on Eminem’s Shady label), who lands his first chart entry in Australia with “Till it’s Gone” coming in at No.70, and the song is featured on his late 2014 due third album ‘Love Story’. Local boy band The Collective come in at No.74 with their twelfth entry “The Good Life” and former Mattafix lead singer Marlon Roudette enters at No.88 with his first solo entry “When the Beat Drops Out” which has gone to No.1 in Germany so far.

Kendrick Lamar debuts at No.92 with “i (Love Myself)”, which is the first taste from his forthcoming third album (no date or title as yet). The song features a sample of the Isley Brothers 1973 single “That Girl”, which did not chart in Australia. The final new entry coming in at No.97 is Ricki-Lee with “In the Mood”, helped by her X-Factor performance this past week, and her upcoming appearance as one of the contestants on ‘Dancing with the Stars’.
