Tim Minchin Pleads In Song For George Pell To Face Royal Commission

Tim Minchin has articulated what a large number of Australia’s are saying right now with a song pleading with the Catholic Church’s third highest ranking officer Cardinal George Pell to come home to face the Royal Commission into child sex abuse.

Pell is “too ill to travel” but made an unannounced visit to Ballarat, Victoria in 2015.

The provocative lyrics may potentially make Minchin legally liable if Pell sues over the song by Tim doesn’t care. The last verse goes:

Oh, Cardinal Pell
My lawyer just rang me to tell
Me this song
Could get me in legal trouble

Oh well, Cardinal Pell
If you don’t feel compelled
To come home by
A sense of moral duty
Perhaps you will come home and frickin’ sue me

At his official website Minchin says, “Cardinal George Pell is the most powerful dude in the Catholic Church of Australia. He’s currently working at the Vatican, but The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has demanded his presence in Australia.

“But George has sent a doctor’s note saying he’s too unwell to fly.

“The whole thing stinks to high hell, and many people in Australia are very, very angry…not least of all, the survivors in Ballarat, where abuse was sickeningly rife.

“Pell was born and educated in Ballarat, and at one point actually lived with Gerry Ridsdale, one of the most prolific (and allegedly protected) paedophiles in Australian history. He has been accused of covering up the actions of others, and of sexually abusing a kid himself.

“The church in Australia (like elsewhere in the world) knew of the actions of many of their priests, and rather than going to the police, shuffled them from diocese to diocese, facilitating their abuse rather than arresting.

“The idea that Pell was unaware of the behaviour of Ridsdale (and others) is laughable to me”.

Tim Minchin is donating all proceeds from his song to the GoFundMe campaign to send survivors to Rome if Pell won’t come back to Australia. The campaign aimed to raise $55,000 for victims of the Catholic Church. To date it has raised over $129,000.
