Triple J has devastated commercial radios stranglehold on radio listening habits in Australia becoming for the first time ever the number one station for 25-39 year olds in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
The 25-39 year old demographic is the prized age group for commercial radio to win. It contains the first home buyers and most socially active audience to attract the highest chunk of cash from advertising agencies.
Triple J is the government run commercial-free network which means ad agencies cannot spend where the core audience is biggest.
Commercial networks cannot attract maximum revenues because they all now have a minority audience.
According to figures released today Triple J is number one for 25 to 29 year olds in Melbourne rating 17.5% ahead of FoxFM at no 2 with 13.9% and 3MMM in third place with 12.0%.
In Sydney Triple J rates equal number one for 25-39 year olds with 2MMM on 15.0% with KIIS third with 9.3% but pulls ahead in the 18-39 demographic after winning the 18-24 demographic with 19.3% ahead of Nova with 19.1% and KIIS with 10.5%. 2MMM lags way behind in the demographic with only 2.6% after shedding two-thirds of its audience dropping 3.6 down from 6.2% and pulling its 18-39 figure right back behind Triple J.
In Brisbane, Triple J is again number one for 25-39 year olds with 22.0% ahead of Nova with 21.6% and 97.3FM with 14.7%
In Adelaide Triple J is number one for 25-39 year olds with 22.3% ahead of Nova with 19.3% and HIT107 with 13.4%.
