Triple J Perth Win Is A Wake-Up Call For Commercial Radio

Triple J is Perth’s number one radio station and that is a real slap in the face for commercial radio stations.

While the achievement was great news for Triple J and surprised the industry, especially the people at Triple J, it is equally a sour story for Perth’s commercial radio stations.

Triple J broadcasts mainly from Sydney and Melbourne and rarely broadcasts from Perth. The Perth win means Perth residents have turned off local radio.

Triple J’s real strength is as the driving force for new music in Australia and especially for Australian artists. More than 50% of music broadcast on Triple J is Australian. That should be another message for commercial radio who complain about having to play 25% Australian content.

Triple J is a public broadcaster, funded by the government and not by advertising. It was originally established as Sydney radio station 2JJ to serve the youth sector of the public under represented by commercial radio and give exposure to alternative music and youth related current affairs.

The essence of the original 2 Double J has been chipped away over the years and today the government funded Triple J has developed into a media brand with its own range of merch including, clothing, magazines and CD and DVD releases. These profits are channelled back into the ABC budget and subsidise the cost of running the network.

Triple J now reaches 1.832 million listeners across Australia every week.

Perth radio ratings (according to Nielsen) were:

Triple J (13.0)
Mix 94.5 (12.1)
96FM (12.1)
Nova93.7 (11.3)
ABC 720 (10.2)
92.9 (9.5)
6PR (8.2)
6IX (6.0)
ABCFM (2.8)
6RN (2.1)
NEWSR (0.9)
