The R&B superstar performed a series of hit songs at a star-studded benefit for the Apollo Theater in New York City on Saturday.

Usher laid his 11-year-old stepson Kyle Glover to rest in Atlanta last month after he passed away from injuries sustained in a tragic accident in early July. The singer acknowledged his personal turmoil in a speech to guests at the event.

‘For all the hard times, you can’t do it without your friends, so I just want to toast a second . Thank you for allowing me to share this incredible moment with you,” he said, according to the New York Post, before adding: ‘Cheers for tears,” as her raised a glass.

Usher certainly hadn’t lost his sense of humour at the event. The 33-year-old star had earlier joked about the audience at the exclusive fundraiser, which raised $2 million to “support programs” at the famous theatre.

‘This isn’t karaoke for millionaires, it is karaoke for billionaires,’ he quipped.

Also performing at the event was Sir Paul McCartney, who was seen dancing to Usher’s hit records with wife Nancy Shevell. The legendary musician admitted it was the iconic city venue that inspired The Beatles to come to America.

‘Where would we have been without you? In Liverpool, we [The Beatles] would have stayed there,” he gushed.

The Isley Brothers and Jennifer Hudson also performed at the star-studded affair.
