More people in Melbourne now wakeup with Red Symons on the radio.

The former Skyhooks guitarist Red Symons has the number one breakfast radio show in Melbourne.

Symons was a founding member of Skyhooks and appeared on the first three albums ‘Living In The 70s’ (1974), ‘Ego Is Not A Dirty Word’ (1975) and ‘Straight In A Gay Gay World’ (1976).

Red left the band in 1977 for a career in television. He had his own segment ‘Red Faces’ on ‘Hey Hey Its Saturday’ and has acted in Neighbours and Blue Heelers. In 1999 Symons began writing a column for Melbourne newspaper The Age and began a weekly segment on ABC774 before settling into his breakfast radio role.

Red Symons breakfast show on ABC774 took number one spot from 3AW’s juggernaut Ross and John program with a 17.2 share compared to 3AW’s 16.6. ABC774 was also the number one radio station overall in Melbourne with a 13.1 share.

Symons association with the ABC goes all the way back to 1975 when 2DoubleJ went to air with Skyhooks ‘You Just Like Me Cos I’m Good In Bed’ as their first song.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the release of Skyhooks ‘Living In The 70s’. A deluxe edition of the album will be released later this year.
