Anthony Callea has ‘pulled a Lazarus’ with his new album ‘Backbone’ debuting at no 1 on the Australian album chart this week.

Anthony Callea’s ‘Backbone’ is the 16th Australian album to reach number one this year. That in itself is a record for the Australian charts breaking Nick Cave’s achievement with ‘Skeleton Tree’ from only last week.

Prior to this week and last, the record for Australian albums at no 1 was set in 2013 with 14 Australian albums topping the chart that year.

For 33-year old Callea, ‘Backbone’ becomes his first number one album since his self-titled debut in 2005, generated off the back of his high-profile Australian Idol performances.

Anthony’s second album ‘A New Chapter’ peaked at no 9 in 2006. ‘Thirty’ in 2013’ reached no 18 and the 2013 Christmas album ‘This Is Christmas’ stalled at no 37.

‘Backbone’ sees Anthony Callea back at Sony Music where he started his career. With Sony’s direction under the guidance of Denis Handlin, Callea went into the studio with Bachelor Girl’s James Roche, who produced the album.

‘Backbone’ is a covers album featuring Anthony Callea’s renditions of songs by Queen, Pat Benatar, Michael Jackson. Steve Winwood and Earth Wind and Fire.

The only original song (written by Anthony Callea) is the title track ‘Backbone’.
