Al Green and Sting are two of the people named to be honored at the 2014 Kennedy Centre donors.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the performing arts has announced the five recipients of the 2014 Kennedy Center Honors.

This years honorees are soul great Al Green, British singer/songwriter and former member of the Police, Sting (Gordon Sumner), actor Tom Hanks, ballerina Patricia McBride and comedienne and actress Lily Tomlin.

The awards will be presented at a December 7 gala at the Kennedy Center For the Arts with the honorees being received by President and Mrs. Obama. They then will be honored by a variety of artists at the gala. The proceedings will be broadcast on CBS later in December.

David M. Rubenstein, chairman of the Kennedy Center, said “The Kennedy Center celebrates five extraordinary individuals who have spent their lives elevating the cultural vibrancy of our nation and the world. Al Green’s iconic voice stirs our souls in a style that is all his own; Tom Hanks has a versatility that ranks him among the greatest actors of any generation; one of the world’s greatest ballerinas, Patricia McBride continues to carry forward her legacy for future generations; Sting’s unique voice and memorable songwriting have entertained audiences for decades; and from the days of her early television and theatrical appearances, Lily Tomlin has made us laugh and continues to amaze us with her acting talent and quick wit.”
