The sixth studio album for UK indie-rock act The Arctic Monkeys titled “Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino” debuts at the top of the ARIA Albums Chart and becomes their third No.1 album in Australia, the set also taking the crown in their home country of England.

“Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino” becomes the 823rd No.1 Album in Australia (1965 to 2018) and the 674th for ARIA (1983 to 2018), plus the 466th to debut at the top of the Aussie album charts, plus the second for the Domino record label, the other being the bands previous album “AM” (16th Sept, 2013, 1 wk), with the bands debut set “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not” (27th Feb, 2006, 1 wk) being the groups other (third) No.1 album here.

The Arctic Monkeys join other acts with three weeks and three No.1 albums in Prince, You Am I, The Amity Affliction and Bliss N’ Eso, while its the first time that the words ‘Tranquility’, ‘Base’ and ‘Casino’ have made it into a No.1 album title, its the third ‘Hotel’ to occupy the Albums summit after “Hotel California” by The Eagles (12 weeks from 17th of Jan, 1977) and “Dream Days at the Hotel Existence” for Powderfinger (1 wk on 11th of June, 2007). Exactly a year ago (22nd of May, 2017) saw the last English act hit the top here with a new album in the self-titled Harry Styles album (TW-98) and this is the 152nd No.1 album by an English performer (solo, duo or group) and it also is the 368th No.1 album by a Group (local or overseas).

The DVD and Blu-ray release two weeks ago for ‘The Greatest Showman’ helps it to climb back up again this week to No.2, while recent promotion for Keith Urban’s “Graffiti U” set sees it rise to No.3 (or these could both be residual Mothers Day sales helping them to rise too, as three of this past weeks sales days included that period). Last Sunday night Channel 7 screened the first part of two for the Olivia Newton-John biopic starring Delta Goodrem as ON-J, and this week the soundtrack for the telemovie debuts at No.4 titled “I Honestly Love You”, featuring eight of Olivia’s songs covered by Delta, plus a new duet with Olivia in “Love is a Gift”.

The current New Zealand (3rd wk), American (2nd wk) and Canadian (1st wk) No.1 album in the Post Malone set “Beerbongs & Bentleys” which is down three places here to No.5, while Ed Sheeran hits his lowest ever position of No.6 with his third album “รท (Divide)”, with last weeks No.1 entry “Reverence” by Parkway Drive falling seven places to No.8 and Missy Higgins is down four places to No.10 with “Solastalgia”. Two further Top 10 debuts are the second album for Charlie Puth and “Voicenotes” at No.7, coming in one place higher than his debut set “Nine Track Mind” (HP-8) achieved back in February of 2016, and new at No.9 is the debut album for US heavy metal super-group Bad Wolves and “Disobey” at No.9, with the albums lead single “Zombie” (HP-26) sitting at No.53 this week.
