Badfinger Baby Blue Is A Hit Again

The 70s Badfinger classic ‘Baby Blue’ has jumped back into the iTunes singles chart in the USA at no. 21 following its placement in the final episode of Breaking Bad.

According to Nielsen SoundScan data ‘Baby Blue’ has increased in sales by 2981% since the show aired on Sunday. It a few hours after the episode ‘Baby Blue’ was downloaded over 5300 times, compared to 200 times the week before.

The show has also reactived sales for other Badfinger songs. ‘Day After Day’, ‘Come and Get It’ and ‘Without You’ have also had increased sales in the past few days. ‘Without Out’, the Badfinger song covered by Nilsson and Mariah Carey, was up 260%.

According to Nielsen BDS, the company that measures radio airplay, U.S. terrestrial radio increased plays of ‘Baby Blue’ by 1175%.

Combined streams from Rhapsody, Slacker, Spotify, AOL Radio, VidZone, Rdio and Xbox Music report ‘Baby Blue’ was streamed over 44,000 times since the final show aired, up from only 200 plays in the previous week.

This YouTube video of Badfinger performing ‘Baby Blue’ has had an increase of over 500,000 views since Sunday night.

Pete Ham wrote the song about his girlfriend Dixie Armstrong. In the last verse of the song he sings “Special love I have for you, Baby Blue / Special love you have for me, Dixie dear”.

Ham died in 1975 at the age of 27.

‘Baby Blue’ was from the 1971 Badfinger album ‘Straight Up’ and released on The Beatles Apple Records label. The song was produced by Todd Rundgren. ‘Baby Blue’ reached no. 14 in the USA and no. 16 in Australia. The album ‘Straight Up’ reached no. 31 in the USA and no. 22 in Australia.
