The ‘60s and ‘70s pop icon will receive the Founders Award, which honours “pioneering songwriters who have made exceptional contributions to music, inspiring and influencing their fellow music creators”.

Previous winners include Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello, Billy Joel, Annie Lennox, Sir Paul McCartney, Smokey Robinson, Patti Smith, Rod Stewart, James Taylor, Tom Waits, Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart, Stevie Wonder and Neil Young.

The President and Chairman of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, Paul Williams, said in a press release: “Carly Simon has always poured her heart and soul into her songwriting, and in the process she has helped re-write the rule book on what popular music can achieve and how it can profoundly change people’s lives.

The 29th Annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards gala will take place on April 18 in Los Angeles, California.

"Paul went away and started the label and George went away and wrote the song”, he said.
