McLean first told the history of rock and roll in 8 minutes 33 seconds in the 1971 classic ‘American Pie’. The song, about the day the music died when Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper were killed in a plane crash in 1959, took us to Bob Dylan (The Jester) and The Beatles (the Sergeants).

The lyrics referenced Mick Jagger (“moss grows fat on a rolling stone”), Janis Joplin (“I met a girl who sang the blues”) and The Byrds (“eight miles high and falling fast”).

Madonna covered the song for the 2000 movie ‘The Next Best Thing’.

While ‘American Pie’ was McLean’s biggest hit it was far from his only one. His other classics includes ‘Vincent’ (about Vincent Van Gogh), ‘Dreidel’, ‘If We Try’ and his cover of Roy Orbison’s ‘Crying’.

Don also wrote ‘And I Love You So’. It became a Top 40 hit (and the last ever hit song) for crooner Perry Como when he was 61-years of age.

Australian country singer Catherine Britt will be the special guest of Don on all but two of the shows.

James Taylor Farewells Australia With Final Tour (Melbourne Review)

I could go to a James Taylor show just for the stories. The man is a part of music history and is still around to tell the tales of how it all began. Like, for instance, being the first artist signed to Apple Records. James “auditioned” for Apple with his song ‘Something In The Way She Moves’. "Paul went away and started the label and George went away and wrote the song”, he said.
