A leading Australian philanthropist has backed the annual New Year’s Falls Music And Arts Festival.

Following last year’s support of 27 local performers for the Marion Bay event in Tasmania, and the fact that it is Tasmania’s biggest tourist event, philanthropist Graeme Wood AM is now sponsoring the festival.

Wood founded online travel site Wotif, funds the online news outlet The Global Mail and last year donated $1.6million to the Greens.

He’s also a longtime supporter of the arts, founding not-for-profit youth arts group Artology, and its WotOpera mini opera program, as well as backing the Fresh Ink playwrights program and the Red Room poetry initiative.

Wood said in a statement, “The Falls Music And Arts Festival is a case study of the tangible impact that creative events, and cultural and ecotourism, can have for the Tasmanian economy. As a philanthropist and a businessman, this inspirational combination of creative endeavour and sustainable economic return is something I’m very keen to support.”

This year will be a landmark for the Falls Festival; the tenth time it has been staged at Marion Bay and the twentieth time at Lorne in Victoria.
