Disney’s ‘Frozen’ soundtrack is the number one album in Australia.

Only the third animated soundtrack and third Disney album to reach No.1 in Australia occurs this week, as the “Frozen” soundtrack climbs to No.1 in its sixteenth week within the Top 10, plus it cracks ▲ Platinum in sales, all thanks to the newly released DVD and Blu-Ray for this past week.

“Frozen” becomes the 702nd No.1 album in Australia (1965 to 2014) and the 552nd for ARIA (1983 to 2014), and as I mentioned, the third No.1 for the Disney studio, the previous two being “The Disney Album” for Michael Crawford (May 2001, two weeks) and the first “High School Musical” soundtrack (from late July 2006 for three weeks). So the “Frozen” album also becomes the first animated Disney film to achieve a No.1 position and also it becomes the 42nd soundtrack from a TV series or Film to hit the top in Australia, the last being “The Sapphires” soundtrack back in August 2012.

The DVD/BR release of a film usually boosts the sales of the album back up the charts, but never really to a new peak, as the release in early April of the “Frozen” DVD in the USA has kept the album at No.1 for the past four weeks, helping it to twelve weeks at the top, the longest for an animated film over there. Here we have had two previous animated soundtracks reach the top, “Shrek 2” in July 2004 and prior to that was “Chef Aid – The South Park Album” in December 1998, both stayed atop for a single week. It’s also the first time that the word ‘Frozen’ has appeared at No.1 in Australia, in fact the first time for any charted album (that I could find).

Entering at No.2 is the debut album for Aussie female rapper (overseas based now) Iggy Azalea entitled “The New Classic” which debuted at No.5 in the UK and No.3 in the USA. Her current single “Fancy” just climbed into the Top 10 for the first time at No.9 and she debuted at No.4 this week as guest vocalist on “Problem” for Ariana Grande, whilst also from the album the track “Black Widow” entered at No.86 featuring Rita Ora and her first chart entry “Work” is back in at No.97.

Also new at No.3 is another debut album, “Meet the Vamps” for UK band The Vamps, who have so far landed three singles chart entries from the album, “Can We Dance” (HP-17, peaked Jan 2014), “Wild Heart” (HP-63, Feb 2014) and “Last Night” (HP-37, April 2014), with this album sitting at No.3 in the UK this week (after debuting at No.2 the previous week).

After two weeks at No.1, “Built on Glass” for Chet Faker drops down to No.4, but thanks to his tour starting here this week, Michael Buble’s former No.1 album “To Be Loved” leaps back up seventy places to No.5, helped by a newly re-packaged tour edition too. INXS drops three places to No.6 with “The Very Best” and down a couple of places to No.7 is “L.O.V.E.” for Harrison Craig. MKTO are also touring, which helps their former No.1 album to claim a second week within the Top 10, as it rises back up thirty-five spots to No.8 (originally the album fell from No.1 to No.19), and another current tourist, Jason DeRulo is back up three places to No.10 with “Tattoos”, whilst another Top 10 returnee is at No.9 (a new peak also), “Abba Gold & More” ahead of next weekends 40th Eurovision Anniversary win.

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: Cliff Richard is headed for his first Top 10 album in almost twenty years next week, as his current set “The Fabulous Rock ‘N’ Roll Songbook” is up five places to a new peak of No.11 (Mothers Day is next weekend in Australia). “+” for Ed Sheeran blasts back up twenty-two places to No.12 thanks to his new chart entry (which is not on this album) “Sing” and his promo tour here this past week. More Mothers Day rises come from Andre Rieu with “Magic of the Musicals” up thirty-four places to a new peak of No.29, “Engelbert Calling” by Engelbert Humperdinck (67 to 40) and “My Land” for Celtic Thunder (77 to 50), whilst also rising are “Settle” for Disclosure (48 to 35), “True” for Avicii (51 to 42) and the recently released DVD for the TV series “Love Child” (came out April 10th) helps the soundtrack to rise back up from 66 to No.45 this week.

DOWN DOWN: After seven weeks within the Top 10, and one week at the top, Pharrell Williams is down three places to No.13 this week with “G I R L”, and after spending now half-a-year on the charts, “Prism” for Katy Perry is down five to No.14 having racked up twenty-two weeks within the Top 10. Russell Morris’ “Van Diemen’s Land” (HP-4) drops eight laces to No.15 after two weeks within the Top 10, and last weeks highest new entry at No.6 of “Caustic Love” for Paolo Nutini falls down ten places to No.16 this week, and the final Top 10 dropouts are both by indigenous Australian artists Jessica Mauboy with “Beautiful” (4 to 18, WI10-4) and “Blackbird” for Dan Sultan (8 to 24, WI10-3). Lorde falls nine places to No.23 with “Pure Heroine” and after leaping back up to No.18 last week “Night Visions” for Imagine Dragons this week drops fifteen to No.33. The John Butler Trio pick up a Gold (●) certification for “Flesh & Blood”, which is down four to No.37 and down fourteen to No.39, is “The Very Best of” by The Eagles. “Recess” for Skrillex tumbles twenty-six spots to No.41 and “Native” for OneRepublic drops twenty-three spots to No.49, whilst leaving the Top 50 this week are Ball Park Music (37 to 53), Kylie Minogue (27 to 55, the only Logie performer to drop down this week), Bastille (17 to 61), Robbie Williams (40 to 63) and leaving from last weeks Top 50 are Nickelback (#11), New Empire (#28), Avicii remixed (#31), Ellie Goulding (#34), Bonja (#41, Daft Punk (#47), Miley Cyrus (#49) and HAIM (#50).

Local opera singer and originally the 2009 Australia’s Got Talent winner, Mark Vincent sees his first compilation debut at No.17 this week entitled “Best So Far”. This debut gives mark his sixth Top 20 albums chart appearance, with three of his album having reached the Top 10, his most recent entry being “The Quartet Sessions” which made it to No.16 in October of 2013. And speaking of opera, debuting at No.20 is the first album for brothers Pene Pati and Amitai Pati and their cousin Moses Mackay who are known as Sol3 Mio with their self-titled album, which has been at No.1 in their native New Zealand for a massive fourteen weeks since it debuted at the top in late November of 2013, selling 5xPlatinum there so far, and the album hasn’t dropped any lower than No.5 so far.

The Pixies debut at No.21 with “Indie Cindy”, which becomes their highest charting album in Australia, surpassing the No.24 that their second compilation album “Death to the Pixies” achieved in October of 1997, plus it becomes their fifth Top 100 albums chart entry and first new studio material since 1991’s “Trompe le Monde” (HP-61, Oct 1991), with this new album comprising tracks from their recent 2013/14 EP’s.

Former Blur and Gorillaz singer Damon Albarn sees his first solo album “Everyday Robots” debut at No.26 this week, with his previous bands scoring six albums for Blur (five studio, one best-of, one a Top 10 set) and four for Gorillaz (two reached the Top 10, one a No.1). The final Top 50 entry is the first for the Bethel Church from their band Bethel Music entitled “You Make Me Brave (Live)”, which comes in at No.34 this week.

Lower 50: Hugh Laurie is currently touring Australia, and his second album “Didn’t it Rain” (HP-35) is back up forty places to No.57 this week, whilst his first set “Let Them Talk” (HP-37) returns to the Top 100 at No.88. The Wiggles best of “Hot Potatoes!” jumps back up twenty-five spots to No.58 and further returning albums come from promo-visitor John Newman with “Tribute” (#66), James Blunt with “Moon Landing” (#72), Illy with “Cinematic” (#76), Guns N’ Roses “Greatest Hits” (#85), “18 Months” for Calvin Harris (#92), “Reset” for Tina Arena (#93), and after the recent documentary on Doc Neeson, The Angels return at No.95 with their “Greatest Hits”.

Stage performers David Hobson and Rachael Beck enter at No.64 with “My Baby Just Cares for Me”, which is David’s twelfth entry and the first for Rachael. The debut album for L.A. based three-piece metal band Devil You Know is entitled “The Beauty of Destruction”, which is new at No.84 and former The Distillers and Spinnerette lead singer Brody Dalle sees her first solo album “Diploid Love” come in at No.89. The final new entry is at No.99, another debut album “It’s Album Time” for Norwegian DJ Todd Terje (an homage in name to DJ Todd Terry), which has reached No.2 in his home country.
