After knocking Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds from the top of the Australian chart earlier this week, Hillsong United has surpassed the Bad Seeds to become the hottest Aussie act on the American chart this week.

Hillsong United ‘Zion’ is set to debut at no. 5 this week on the US chart after selling around 35,000 copies, according to hitsdailydouble.com.

The cult religious group generated a fiery debut amongst music people in Australia this week who questioned their rights to be on the chart.

Hillsong United sell their music directly at their followers at their convention and those sales count towards the ARIA chart. In the opinion of Noise11, that is completely legitimate as any artist can sell their music directly to fans at their own gigs and have those sales count towards the chart position.

The ARIA chart is not a popularity contest. It is essentially a list of the biggest selling singles and albums from highest to lowest every week. It’s simple really, the artist who sells the most charts the highest.

In America last week Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds ‘Push The Sky Away’ debuted at number 29 on the Billboard chart, making it the Bad Seeds highest debuting American release ever.

Hillsong United’s Top 5 debut places them behind albums by Bruno Mars, Atoms For Peace, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Mumford & Sons.
