The legendary guitarist Joe Satriani recently filmed a concert in Montreal, Canada, in 3D with surround sound. Titled Satchurated: Live In Montreal, it will be shown in Australian cinemas this Wednesday 7 March at 9pm.

We spoke to Joe about the filming of it, and discovered that while he’s usually not so confident in front of the cameras – “I’m not an actor” – the circumstances of this show were particularly special.

“The night that we were filming was the year anniversary of my mother’s death,” he reveals, “I thought that I had put that in perspective but the evening before all those feelings were coming back.”

He didn’t sleep or feel well and says, “I felt a bit like a rock n’ roll robot coming into that theatre that afternoon to start filming because I was trying to keep it together emotionally and be professional about it.”

Satriani attributes his band and the powerful audience response for getting him through the show.

“I didn’t really notice it, I was kinda feeling funny about the whole thing,” he admits,  “until months later when I saw the 3D version and heard it in surround sound and thought ‘Wow, this is a special night’.”

We also speak about the logistics of playing to 3D cameras, ‘costume changes’, technical hiccups, his forthcoming G3 tour of Australia, his relationship with fellow guitar legends Steve Vai and Steve Lukather, the misconception about him appearing in The Hangover, the odd circumstances behind his actual appearance in the film Moneyball, his Grammys hoodoo, the possibility of a new album and… Coldplay.

Satchurated: Live In Montreal screens in cinemas around Australia tomorrow at 9pm. Find your nearest venue here.
