Hagman, who played the infamous J.R. Ewing in the super-soap Dallas, lost his battle with cancer and died on Friday afternoon in a Dallas hospital. Linda Gray played J.R’s wife Sue-Ellen and Patrick Duffy played his brother Bobby in ‘Dallas’.

This year the show was revived with Hagman, Duffy and Gray returning to their original roles 20 years after the show ended after 13 seasons. It was a ratings hit and was renewed for a second season for 2013.

Hagman was the son of Broadway star Mary Martin. His first big role was as astronaut Major Anthony Nelson in ‘I Dream Of Jeannie’, with Barbara Eden. In 1990, Hagman coaxed his old pal Eden into a role in Dallas. She played the conniving business woman Lee Ann De La Vega in five episodes of the final season.

Hagman was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2011. He died at 4.20pm at the Medical City Dallas Hospital.

In a statement, his family said, “When he passed, he was surrounded by loved ones. It was a peaceful passing, just as he had wished for. The family requests privacy at this time.”
