The petition to have a Melbourne laneway named after Divinyls singer Chrissy Amphlett has been officially presented to Melbourne City Council. Melbourne City Council has voted unanimously to seek a city laneway to name after the late singer.

Chrissy died in April after a battle with cancer and multiple sclerosis.

Melbourne City Council sat on Tuesday and is now committed to find an unnamed lane they could name Chrissy Amphlett Lane. Under existing city guidelines already named lanes cannot be renamed in the city but Melbourne has an abundance of unnamed lanes.

More than 6000 people signed the petition to honour the late singer with a lane in her name. The petition was handed to Councillor Rohan Leppert by Chrissy’s husband Charley Drayton and her popstar cousin Little Pattie.

The search for the appropriate unnamed lane to become Chrissy Amphlett Lane is to be conducted by the City of Melbourne.

A statement from the City of Melbourne reads, “Council officers are currently investigating whether there is a suitable lane or landmark to commemorate Ms Amphlett’s contribution.

“If an appropriate lane or landmark is identified and approved by Council, the next step will be to consult with stakeholders. If there are no objections, the City of Melbourne will request the Victorian Registrar of Geographic Names register the name”.

New Divinyls tour has Charley Drayton riled

On Monday Divinyls co-founder Mark McEntee announced he will tour a new line-up of his legendary band in 2019. While the announcement was met with scorn from Charley Drayton, the husband of his late co-founder Chrissy Amphlett, the fact remains that Divinyls is very much a part of McEntee’s legacy and he is well within his rights to honor that legacy any way he sees fit.
