Melbourne’s Iconic Cherry Bar Faces Potential Closure

Melbourne’s iconic Cherry Bar in AC/DC Lane, Melbourne now faces the threat of closure following a new residential development now towering alongside.

New homeowners in the 12-storey 189 residential apartment will have legal priority over the music venue against any noise complaint made.

The Cherry Bar now faces an expensive sound-proofing make-over to become compliment with noise laws for the future residents who are choosing to move next to a music venue despite the Cherry Bar business operating on the same scale for decades.

Under current laws, one complaint could mean closure of the venue.

Cherry Bar co-owner James Young has started a PledgeMusic campaign to raise funds to soundproof the venue. “Cherry has paid a small fortune to investigate the necessary sound attenuation ‘works’ to make us compliant in all circumstances,” Young says. “These works, in summary, involve a brick wall behind our stage area, double-glazing of all windows and the creation of a two-door soundproof bubble entrance to Cherry. The cost of these works is too high for Cherry to bear alone. Cherry Bar does not have the available funds to complete these works, so Cherry Bar faces the very real threat of being closed down”.
Young agrees going to the punters for financial support is not ideal but necessary. “Cherry has paid a small fortune to investigate the necessary sound attenuation ‘works’ to make us compliant in all circumstances,” he says.
