Jeanne Pratt’s The Production Company has premiered the new Gershwin musical ‘Nice Work If You Can Get It’ for the first time in Australia and it is one of the best shows from the company to date.

The Production Company specialises in high quality, affordable theatre for all ages and in the past has produced the classics.

‘Nice Work If You Can Get It’ features the music of George and Ira Gershwin and with a story based on the 2012 book by Joe DiPietro. Because the story is contemporary jokes about politics are relevant today with multiple slaps at both the left and right side of politics, albeit the American based Republican and Democrats which translate to Liberal and Labor in Australia.

The music is a Gershwin greatest hits with standards such as ‘S’ Wonderful’, ‘Somebody To Watch Over Me’, ‘I’ve Got A Crush On You’ and the title song heard throughout the production.

Director Roger Hodgman said, “A new Gershwin musical could suggest a jukebox musical with a thin book used as an excuse to present some of George and Ira’s many great songs. But Joe DiPietro has done something far more interesting. He has taken the very successful 1920’s musical ‘Oh Kay’ and used the bones of the plot, a couple of the songs and created a completely new musical.”

The cast features Australia’s best with Christie Whelan Browne, Gina Riley, John Wood, George Kapinaris and Nicki Wendt starring alongside the main characters played by Rohan Browne and Ester Hannaford.

“The cast is perfect,” says Jeanne Pratt. “If you don’t like this one I suggest you see a doctor”.

‘Nice Work If You Can Get It’ will be performed only 10 times finishing up at the State Theatre at the Arts Centre Melbourne on 23 August 2015.
