Tasmania’s rebel art complex, the Museum of Old and New Art, has prepared for its annual music and arts festival by announcing a bold and varied line-up.

Curator Brian Ritchie (of Violent Femmes and The Break) has selected internationally-acclaimed artist and multiple Mercury Prize-winner PJ Harvey, US pop-folk sensation tUnE-yArDs, and dark cabaret stars Dresden Dolls.

They also have Icelandic minimalists Amiina, French ‘musique concrete’ pioneer Pierre Henry, Japanese audio-visual artist Ryoji Ikeda, Mongolian throat-singers Hanggai, Germany’s one man band The Dad Horse Experience, and more to come.

Returning to MONA FOMA in 2012: controversial Australian dance troupe BalletLab, contemporary classical pianist Gabriella Smart, a new multilingual opera from IHOS, and composer and audio-visual artist Robin Fox.

Of course, there’s bound to be more challenging, joyful and kooky art projects going on in every nook and cranny around the MONA site and into Hobart.

Not everything is free this year, but there is still much to be seen that costs nothing more than your curiosity.

MOFO runs from January 13 – 21, 2012 in Hobart, Tasmania. For more details about tickets and exhibitions, head to the MOFO website.
