PP Arnold has Ike & Tina Turner to thank for her career

PP Arnold says she started her career with thanks to Ike and Tina Turner when she became an Ikette for Ike and Tina Turner in 1964.

“I found myself in Tina Turner’s living room singing ‘Dancing in the Streets’ and that was the beginning of it,” PP told Studio Ten.

She said that despite the domestic violence problems Tina Turner suffered at the hand of Ike, her time with the couple was purely professional. “I tried to stay away from all the domestic things that were going on even though it was very, vert difficult to me because Tina had saved me from a life of domestic violence as a young girl,” PP said.

“My experiences were professional. I was an Ikette, I was an employee, so I just did what I was told. I was very young and shy and quite inhibited so my job was to sing and that’s what I did,” she added.

Working with Ike and Tina Turner was an incredible time for PP Arnold. “I like to remember being on stage with Ike and Tina because that’s where it was all happening musically. They were a dynamic duo live and on stage,” she said.

PP, who married in her teens, had her own domestic violence issues to work through and the Ikettes job got her away from her abusive husband. “I lied and told my husband I was going shopping,” she said. “I went to help my girlfriends out. Tina liked the way I sounded. They offered me the job and it happened from there. Meeting them changed my life”.

James Taylor Farewells Australia With Final Tour (Melbourne Review)

I could go to a James Taylor show just for the stories. The man is a part of music history and is still around to tell the tales of how it all began. Like, for instance, being the first artist signed to Apple Records. James “auditioned” for Apple with his song ‘Something In The Way She Moves’. "Paul went away and started the label and George went away and wrote the song”, he said.
